The explanatory essay was a prompt to display our understanding of Freud’s concept and see how it’s used to develop other stories. The story I chose was, “The Black Cat” due to reading this short tale before. At first, I had trouble because I understood how to see Freudian concepts in the story, but I felt like I was getting away from the prompt. The prompt wasn’t to show the Freudian concepts in the story which what my first draft was. It was a to develop an argument on how his theories helped develop the story, and I argued that Freudian concepts are the reason the narrator committed all his murders. Also, while writing this I felt like I had to take into consideration my rhetorical situation. I spent a big dosage of my paper explaining who Freud was, and explaining his concepts instead of primarily focusing on The Black Cat, so I had trouble keeping it brief. But, later understanding my audience were Ms. Alyssa and Ms. Von Uhl I cut all the Freud explaining off. I just planned to leave an understanding of the concepts of wishful impulses and mnemic symbols those were the terms I was using. I felt like using wishful impulse was easy to display, but with mnemic symbols I felt like it would be a little different. I felt like they weren’t a lot of papers referring to mnemic symbols, so I used it to change things up. Lastly, I felt like this assignment helped me use appropriate language that conveys meaning and is grammatically correct. Reflecting on my Literacy narrative I lacked using the right transition, and higher grammar which this paper helped me do. I focused on working on better transitions on this paper and I felt like I improved. Overall, I felt like this prompt helped better analyze stories in a different way and made me focus on my grammar.
